Classroom turns your iPad into a powerful teaching assistant, helping a teacher guide students through a lesson, see their progress, and keep them on track. With Classroom, you can easily launch the same app on every student device at the same time, or launch a different app for each group of students. Classroom helps teachers focus on teaching so students can focus on learning. Launching Early Fall 2016 - App Link - Live Update Link
Teaching students basic digital photography and editing skills is now widely considered a necessary piece for media literacy. Teachers can model and put in place routines for helping students become more critical of the pictures they take. By using apps like Easy Class Cam and having students be in charge of effectively managing the digital files they create, teachers can not only decrease the amount of time spent organizing/clearing out the device but also empower students with practices that enhance the learning process. Kids of the current generation will almost always have a device that can take pictures within their reach, so doesn't it make sense to help them use that power more effectively, safely and reflectively?
With the recent updates to the site, users will see that there are also some new apps users will want to install. The Apps in Series page - which can be found under the Resources page, includes an updated Google spreadsheet with all the apps used in the series listed and hyperlinks to the apps. The spreadsheet has two tabs - one listing the apps in A-Z order by title and a second tab, listing the apps by topic. Note: some of the apps, such as the blog or the Adobe Connect apps, may be used by some instructors and not by others. Some topics include options to complete the project with either a free or a paid app. You are encouraged to talk with your instructor before purchasing any of the paid apps. (Andy Mann)
As a result of the feedback from participants, the steering committee has worked hard to update the site over the summer with updated/replaced apps, updates to projects and more. Users will immediately recognize the numbers for each topic have been removed. While it may be useful to "chunk" topics into logical groupings, or consider one topic as a logical lead into another topic, they may be covered any order.
App and Topic updates include: Connecting and Collaborating, a new page which combined logical projects/apps from Connecting and Communicating and Collaboration pages - which have been retired to an Archives area. A new Movie Making page was created, recognizing the power of the movie creation as a creative and powerful way to communicate ideas.
Participant recommendations lead to the development of a new Problem Solving & Programming page and introduce a new collection of apps. Problem solving is an important cross curricular skills. Educators are starting to understand the importance of teaching some form of programming to help students with planning and logical thinking.
Creative Expression was updated to include three popular educational apps which can be used in so many creative ways across grade levels and curriculum areas. These apps include: Tellagami, and YAKiT Kids/ChatterPix Kids.
Staying Informed was updated to include Twitter, NPR News and AP Mobile in addition to original USA Today and Flipboard apps.
The 21 Things 4 iPads home page has a new fresh look making it easier to navigate. And for those who use and would like to help support this project, a Donate Button has been added to the About page.
If you plan to teach 21 Things 4 iPads this year, be sure to register so we can include your site or program on the Hosting Sites page. Registering also gives you access to password protected resource page - with customizable documents such as rubrics and pacing guides (Andy Mann.)
The free LexicEN English Offline Dictionary & Thesaurus (Lite Version) was added as a resource to the Research and Reference page. A strength of this dictionary is that it works offline and is free.
Teachers with younger children will like the Dictionary for Kids app. This app includes kid friendly definition and images. The app works offline or online. This new dictionary was added as a resource to the Research and Reference page.
When teachers are selecting dictionary apps to compare for the comparison of dictionaries assignment, they may opt to select dictionaries listed in resources as an alternative choice.
In Thing 14, participants had previously been asked to add 2 screenshot artifacts during the Guided Access activity. It is no longer possible to take a screenshot of the Guided Access "setup" screen, however. When you activate Guided Access and are able to choose your settings, an attempt at a screenshot will simply lock the iPad or exit out of the app.
The following activity directions and related artifact requirements have been removed: "Take a screenshot of this screen before pressing Start."
Rubrics should be updated accordingly.
KaHoot (free) is a browser based formative assessment tool/site. Teacher creates questions (multiple choice, survey, discussion) and the site generates a code participants enter at: http://kahoot.it to answer the question. Works in real time with a teacher (host) opening the activity so participants can enter their answers. Works with iPads. The program supports the use of images and video in the questions and has a user-friendly interface (e.g. rather than use A, B, C, D - it uses shapes and colors.) KaHoot ( was recently added as an app to "Other Resources" on the Assessment page.
A popular comic creation web tool, Make Beliefs Comix, has recently been released as a free iPad app. This has been added to the Other Resources section of Thing 8, Comic and Book Creation.
The app has many options for students to create scenes, characters and dialogue. Finished comics can be saved to the camera roll.
